In March of 2010, Palmetto Gunite Construction Company, Inc. entered into a contract with Save the Light, Inc. to construct Phase 2 of the Morris Island Lighthouse restoration. This design-build contract is based on a proposal our team of experts presented to Save the Light, Inc. and includes a structural analysis of the existing deep foundations, a design and installation of a new deep foundation support system to support the lighthouse, the construction of a service dock, and various support structures to protect the foundation supports from the severe marine environment.

The following updates will offer information on the historic project as well as ongoing photos and links to keep the public informed as this project unfolds.

PROJECT APPROACH:

The Sequencing of events on this project include:

• Mobilization to provide access for equipment and personnel
• Investigation of underlying soils, cribbing, piles and their condition
• Preparation of engineering design and construction documents
• Construction of a Permanent Foundation Support System
• Demobilization from the site

CONSTRUCTION:

The basic design calls for the installation of 75 ton Micro Piles through the existing foundation. These Micro Piles are required to support the weight of the structure as the original wood piles have been compromised by age and damage from marine wood bores which have infested local waters.

A temporary walkway gives workers access to the structure early in the project.

Construction of a temporary dock to facilitate construction materials is a early priority.

Placement of sand fill between the lighthouse and the existing sheet pile wall will protect the foundation of the structure for generations into the future.
